Currently, the Netherlands has about 1.7 million people living with cardiovascular disease.1 Cardiovascular diseases are the second leading cause of death and the main reason for hospital admissions in the Netherlands. 2-5
‘Cardiomyopathies are heart muscle diseases affecting about 1 in 500 individuals in the Netherlands, meaning roughly 40,000 people live with cardiomyopathy— around 2.4% of all cardiovascular patients. Both prevalence and disease burden are rising, yet these conditions have received little policy attention so far.6-7
In June 2023, several organizations launched the initiative ‘Zorg voor de Hartspier’ with one central question: “How can we better reach society and improve understanding and support for individuals living with cardiomyopathy?”. The Goal? Reduce disease burden and societal impact for people with inherited heart conditions.

Making the impact visible: The Impact Map
To address this, the initiative aims to improve factual insight into cardiomyopathies in the Netherlands. This includes quantifying disease burden and societal impact through an impact analysis with contributions from the following experts.
